We had such a great weekend. On Friday, after I finished up Daily Pages and Jeff got home from school, we headed out west to Grand Rapids. We had dinner at our favorite restaurant: San Chez (highly recommend if you’re ever in downtown Grand Rapids), a Spanish tapas bistro that we hit up basically any time we’re in town. If you ever stop in, definitely get the croquetas.
After dinner, we headed across the street to see Lawrence (my favorite band) at a great little venue. They had a great opening act—Jacob Jeffries—and their entire show was great. They played all my favorite songs, and even had a surprise engagement happen on stage while they were all jamming out. It was so cute how they set it all up, and the girl getting engaged was SO surprised. It was such a great moment to witness.
Saturday we ran a bunch of errands—Trader Joe’s, Costco, etc. But we also stopped by an art show happening at the local Frank Lloyd Wright house in the next town over.
In 1940, Michigan State University art professors Alma Goetsch and Kathrine Winckler commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a home in Okemos where they could live and create. Now, decades after their deaths, some of their art is returning to the home.
Wright later reportedly christened the Goetsch-Winckler House his “favorite small house.” It features the open floor plan and large windows of his first Usonian house, aiming to encourage harmony with the environment, something that resonated with the modernist homeowners.
Today, the home is owned by architecture enthusiast Nate Meyer and his wife, who have made the property more accessible to the public. In their first year of ownership, they’ve hosted more than 200 guests for free tours and opened up bookings for overnight stays. In the future, they hope to host more creative events such as student art shows, en plein air painting, musical performances, book readings and beyond. Saturday’s art sale will serve as somewhat of a test run.
It was such a great house, with so many little incredible details. The built-in windowsills where you could just touch all the flowers, the brick and wood bookshelves, and my favorite—the sliding glass doors in the bedroom that led out to the private outdoor patio.
All in all—a really great weekend.
Technique of the Day
This week’s Currently List:
Watching:
So much watching this week. Lots of football, baseball!! highlights, video game world championships, Only Murders in the Building, and catching up on Great British Bake Off.
Reading:
I’m slogging my way through the third book of this Mirror Walker series. I loved the second book, but the third book is just not holding my interest nearly as much.
Listening:
HP2, Iron Flame, and Caraval—2025 is the year for audiobooks.
Making:
Pizza and Chicken parm over the weekend. Now I’ve got great leftovers.
Feeling:
Tired. We had a long weekend. We went to a concert (Lawrence) and dinner on Friday in Grand Rapids. On Saturday we ran a bunch of errands and went to check out this Frank Lloyd Wright house in the next town over, where they were having a cool art sale with works from the original homeowners.
Planning:
Moving more stuff around the house. I don’t love where I moved some of my bookshelves, so I need to figure out where some of this furniture is going…I might need to change some stuff around in my library as well…
Loving:
The house that we went to go see over the weekend was amazing. It was a small house, but the way it was built was really amazing. All the built-ins and the little details were so special.
