Daily Pages: Using Color to Make Your Photos Pop

Bright backgrounds, subtle shimmer, and the little details that bring black and white photos to life.

I just finished eating the best sandwich in town. Jeff was working on the other side of Lansing today, and picked me up a brisket banh mi from our favorite BBQ restaurant (it’s also a Vietnamese restaurant—and it also used to be a Boost mobile store). It was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives a few years back if you want to check it out. And if you’re ever in the Lansing area, go visit and say hi.

Today’s page just kind of came together—I’ve got a stack of pictures on my desk that I want to scrapbook in my Daily Pages notebook, so I just took one and went for it.

Technique of the Day

I took a bunch of brightly colored gel prints and arranged them to make a simple background. I chose prints that felt cohesive—two of them have those little pink paint splotches, which really helps tie everything together.

I wanted the bright colors to help make the black and white photo stand out. I also really love using a little bit of silver glitter paper with my black and white photos. It’s a great way to add a color that subtly shifts between black and white with it’s shimmer.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Use Bright Colors to Highlight Black & White Photos

A bold colored background can make your black and white photos stand out even more by creating contrast and a little bit more visual interest.

Pro Tip: Try adding a thin white border around your photo if you want to separate it from the background without losing the pop of color.
