Daily Pages: Tweaking What Already Works

When repetition is the only thing my brain has energy for, I let it carry me to the page anyway.

Today has been brutal on the headache front. I woke up at 4am, 5:30am, and 7:30am. After waking up that third time, I told my alarm to kindly fuck off, and stayed in bed, under the covers, listening to LotR—Fellowship until about 10am.

I feel like I’m constantly bitching about my headaches these days, and I’m sorry about that. But this is the worst time of year for my headaches and it’s such a huge part of my everyday life, which seeps into my art, which seeps into the things I want to talk to you about in these daily updates.

Sidenote: I really do love that I have a little space to say hi and chat with you on a regular basis. I’m not finding myself going on any of the social media sites these days, and I really miss that little bit of connection that we have. So please, know that I love hearing from you—and I know that the comments on these are for paid subscribers only (that’s a platform thing and not my decision)—so please just hit reply and say hi or let me know what you’re thinking. And absolutely shoot me a reply if you’ve got a question about the day’s page. <3

Technique of the Day

So yesterday, I talked about how I didn’t know what to do, so I was going to do the same thing I did the day before. Today, I took the same approach.

I started out pulling a sheet of paper out of an old edition of Flow magazine. Then I moved to doodling on the gel plate with the Sharpie Creative Markers. Little asterisks in black. Wonky circles in white. But instead of adding a layer of acrylic paint and pulling a print with a solid color background—I added layer of gel matte medium (clear stuff) so that I would see the background of my magazine paper through the little doodles on the gel plate.

It was just enough of a tweak to feel confident in what I was doing—but also get that little dopamine hit from doing a new thing.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Tweak One Thing at a Time

If you’ve got enough energy to try something new, just pick one small tweak. Instead of changing your whole approach, try swapping in a new medium (like matte medium instead of paint), a new background, or just a new way to layer.

Pro Tip: Tiny changes can create major creative satisfaction—without burning you out.
