Daily Pages: Thursday3 with New Paints

I'm absolutely a Golden Fluorescent Magenta girl.

So we’ve been chatting about my trip to Blick last week—and yes, we’re going to keep talking about it, I left town, went to an actual store(s), and did consumerism for the first time in almost six months.

One of the things that I picked up was Golden Fluorescent Magenta in three different mediums: a tube of the artist acrylic, a bottle of the fluid acrylic, and a bottle of the high flow acrylic.

I want to learn and understand the differences between the different mediums and figure out which work best for me—so I removed the rest of the variables from the equation to make it as easy as possible.

I’ve played with them on the gel plate, and there’s not too much of a difference between the fluid and the high flow—but they contrast interestingly with the traditional acrylic. I’m excited to play around with them a little more over the next few weeks.

Do you have a specific paint medium that you love? What are you using right now?

Technique of the Day

I pulled those same stickers I used earlier in the week, but this time I put them on the plate backwards (sticky side up) so that they’d show up correctly on the final print. I started out with a layer of that florescent magenta, and then followed up with a little bit of yellow on top, and I really like how that came out.

The Sharpie Creative Marker in white up on the fabric tape is also awesome. I love that fabric tape so much. It’s great for wrapping the spines of diy books. It’s got such a great feel to it. So much fun to touch. I’m so glad that the white marker shows up so well. I’ll definitely be doing that again in the future.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Compare Supplies by Minimizing Variables

When you’re testing different versions of a medium (like all the different acrylics), keep everything else as consistent as possible—same tools, same surface, same process.

Pro Tip: This lets you actually see what’s different rather than just what’s new. You’ll make smarter choices and waste fewer supplies.
