Daily Pages: The Art of Messing Up

Not what you planned? It might be even better

Today’s page is so fun. I really love how the background came out. It wasn’t the first gel print that I created today, but it is the one that worked with today’s page.

I love bright colors and thick black lines. These are the Sharpie Creative Markers, and they’re so easy to use. They dry quickly and don’t dry out. I prefer them over POSCA pens. I need to get myself the new colors—earth tones.

Technique of the Day

I was trying to do a specific thing with today’s gel print—I wanted three strips of color—yellow, spring green, and this tealish blue. I messed up a few times in the process. First when I went to put down a little more green paint, I pulled up a bunch of the paint that had already dried. Then, I had left the yellow paint too long on the gel plate and it was totally dry by the time I put the paper down, so I had to pull it up a little, and add some more wet paint to get the full adhesion.

That being said—I absolutely love how the page turned out and I think it looks awesome as the background.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Embrace the Happy Accidents

Gel printing can be unpredictable, but that’s what makes it fun. When the paint dries too quickly or pulls up unexpectedly, it often creates unexpected texture and depth.

Pro Tip: If a print doesn’t turn out how you planned, try using it as a background—imperfections add character.
