Daily Pages: Orphaned Photo Thursday3

Using up extra selfies in my notebook

This weekend I’m finally headed to the MSU plant sale—for real this time. Last weekend I was so sure it was happening that Jeff and I woke up early to get there as soon as they opened, and when we drove over…no one was there. Turns out I was a whole week early—my bad.

But we made the most of it and hit up the local nursery instead, which honestly felt like its own kind of win. Especially since it was really packed and we wound up finding a super easy parking spot, right up front. Now I’ve got strawberries planted, and sweet peas ready to go as soon as the rain clears.

Technique of the Day

I had fun playing around with the background today. I pulled a sheet of vintage paper and added some liquid acrylics on the gel plate to get the mottled look. It’s perfect against the black and white photo.

My first pen ran out half-way into the word headache, so I switched over to a black paint marker. It’s not my preferred journaling pen, but I couldn’t find another permanent marker, and I knew it would write on the painted tag. I’m happy with the way it came out, even if I didn’t have a ton of room to write.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Use What You’ve Got (Even If It’s Not Ideal)

When then pen you’re using pen runs dry, don’t let it derail your flow. Grab the next best thing and keep moving. I like picking out a pen that’s about the same boldness, or a little bolder, and then going over what I’ve already written so it all looks the same.

Pro Tip: Keep a paint marker or two in your toolkit—they’re great backup options for journaling on tricky surfaces like painted tags or glossy gel prints.
