Daily Pages: I'm Not Less Productive

It just looks different in the summer

We’re getting into to real summer now—lots of time in the air conditioning this week, which means less time in my studio, both at the big desk and on the computer.

I can still get a lot of stuff done in the other parts of the house—I spent a good 8 hours working at the kitchen table yesterday—but it’s definitely not the same. So I’ve had to be a little bit more graceful about personal productivity expectations.

It’s not that I’m “less productive” in the summer. It’s just that the places where I find myself doing my best work are not the same. In the summer, my best work happens in the kitchen and the garden. Coming up with crafty ways to use all the fresh ingredients—which is a huge help when it comes to eating properly + headaches. Since my headaches are not a huge fan of the heat, eating good fresh food throughout the summer is one of the easiest ways for me to take care of myself.

Also—it’s a great excuse to start making dinner at 2pm. It’s honestly incredible the things that you figure out while you’re chopping veggies. If you’re feeling like you’ve got some creative block—just go chop up some carrots, onions, and garlic and get your brain doing something else. 90% of the time, it’ll get you right back to where you need to be creatively.

Technique of the Day

Meh. I don’t love today’s page. The colors just aren’t working in a way that makes me particularly happy. But it’s fine. I had fun, I enjoyed it. But, it’s not winning any page of the year awards, and that’s perfectly fine! My practice is not about the end result, but about showing up and getting my hands a little messy each day.

Chop Veggies, Unblock Creativity

Feeling stuck? Step away from your notebook and go prep something fresh. Slicing, stirring, and seasoning is a perfect reset.

Pro Tip: A 10-minute kitchen task gives your brain just enough space to solve that creative block on its own.
