I was cleaning up last night, and just as I was finishing up I found my old stash of embossing powders. I knew that I had them around, and after playing with the ultra clear stuff last week, I was thrilled to stumble on these.
For today, I just wanted to play around with them, see what they looked like, if they even still worked…
I’ll definitely pull them out again in the future. I love that white with the watercolors. That’s something to explore. Same with the ultra fine powder. I definitely want to do some fun water techniques with that as well.
Technique of the Day
I grabbed my shapes stamp set and pulled out an old versamark (clear) stamp pad. I wanted to test out each of the colors. See what they look like on the page, make sure that they still work, since they’re all over 15+ years old. Once I had a bunch of the powders on there and dried, I thought we should add something watery to take advantage of the resistance on the embossing powder.
I grabbed my watercolor palette, spritzed down my gel plate, and just started adding some color to the water drops on the plate. After I had a few colors down in different spots on the plate, I took the paper I had embossed on, and pressed it down onto the watercolors. I dried it with my heat gun and got it into the book.
I’m super pleased with how today’s play session turned out, and I’ve got a bunch of great ideas for how I’d really like to play with this technique in the future. It’s a great way to add big bold elements to your mixed media.

Tips & Creative Wisdom
Use Embossing as a Watercolor Resist
Embossed designs repel water-based paints, making them perfect for layering with watercolor or ink washes. Play around with colors pooling in different areas for a more organic look.
Pro Tip: Spritz your gel plate with water and add your watercolor paints before pressing your embossed paper onto it for a blended, artsy look.
