I had no idea what I wanted to do today—it’s been a very ‘behind-the-scenes’ week over here. Lots of updates on the website, getting everything fixed up after our Book of Me kickoff weekend.
When I’m not sure what to do, one of my first tricks is to look around my desk and see if I’ve got anything inspirational. This time, my container of thin strips grabbed my eye.
I added in another old photograph—this one was from when I was writing my senior thesis in college on women running in partisan primaries in US House races.
Technique of the Day
I pulled out the container and saw some fun strips that went together. They were both warm colors, so I decided to pull a few more warm colored strips and make the background you see here.
It’s a mix of gel prints and collage papers. I also keep patterned paper, cardstock, and other specialty papers in that collection, but nothing made its way onto today’s page.

Tips & Creative Wisdom
Build a Simple Yet Bold Background
Layering paper strips is an easy way to create visual interest without overcomplicating the design. Whether you're using gel prints, collage papers, or patterned cardstock, overlapping different textures makes for a dynamic foundation.
Pro Tip: Stick to a single color family (like warm tones) for an effortless, unified look.
