Daily Pages: Back to Painting

Less humidity means more painting!

The weather is so nice out, I’ve got all my windows open and I’m enjoying this September weather thoroughly. The cooler temperatures and less humidity makes it a lot easier to play around with paint again. I was having such issues over the summer with sticky pages because nothing was drying. The humidity made it next to impossible to do gel printing in the summer. So, now that it’s so much cooler out, you’ll see me pull the paints out more and more.

I’ve got some plans for a fun art-journal DIY album for my December project, and I want to practice a few things before I start pulling that project together in early November.

Here’s a quick look at the style of journal I’ll be putting together. I shared it in yesterday’s Daily Pages video, but pulled a clip for you to check out.

Technique of the Day

Today’s page was a pretty simple back to gel printing. I’ve got my Sharpie creative markers out to make some random marks on the plate. I like to pick out 2-3 colors when I’m playing around with mark making—it makes it a lot easier to find a background color that works. If there’s too many colors, everything gets a little jumbled, and you’ll actually have to do more work to make it seem cohesive.

For today’s background, I mixed a metallic teal with some Payne’s gray for a dark teal. I was going for an outer space type feeling, and I’m super happy with how the print came out.

To finish up the page, I added a Toni Morrison quote from her novel Sula. I love using these book quotes to give my pages a little extra something. They look so much better here in the book than just sitting in a pile on my shelf :)

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Cool Weather, Dry Paint

When the air shifts, so does your creative energy. Fall is the perfect time to bring back supplies that didn’t work in the heat.

Pro Tip: Pull out a medium you avoided this summer—paint, glue, even washi—and see how it feels now.
