Behind the Page

Here. For. Simplicity.

I was cleaning up my studio over the weekend, and came across an issue of Wired Magazine and just kinda threw it on the top of my desk. When I came over this afternoon to create today’s Daily Page—I started flipping through the issue and came across a bunch of different images that would make awesome backgrounds or collage fodder.

In the video below, you’ll see me go through the pages and rip out anything that looked interesting. I picked out one for today (this fun modern food related page) and put the others in a folder to flip through with other magazine pages—to use later on. I tend to use these the same as I would patterned paper/gel prints/any other pretty papers.

Technique of the Day

This week’s Currently List:

Watching:

Football (my team is still so bad, but they played early and in Germany, so I didn’t have to watch them be pathetic). Also, the MLS playoffs have been amazing. Watching the Atlanta vs Miami series was absolutely thrilling. As for regular TV, I’ve been watching Shrinking and Great British Bake Off each week.

Side Note: This is my favorite GBBO since the Rahul season.

Reading:

All the stuff about the new Fourth Wing book coming out in January. Give me all the sneak peeks, all the theories, and all the fan art. I’m still deciding whether or not I’m going to go to a book release party (I’m a mostly ebook girl now) — but it’s getting to the point where I probably start needing to collect the physical books.

Listening:

I’m back to listening to the Fourth Wing audiobooks—idk about you, but fantasy worlds are exactly where I want to lose myself right now. Also, I’ve got the best headphones ever, and it makes me so happy to use them all day.

Making:

I made Texas style chili/chili con carne this weekend. I used up a good majority of my dried peppers (I’m a huge fan of guajillo, morita, and anchos). I’ve been looking for a good dried new mexico chili, but I haven’t found one in my usual spots.

Feeling:

Headaches again. Weather change has a big impact on my headaches.

Planning:

Festival! Join us for the Awesome Ladies Project Virtual Scrapbook Festival this weekend! Starts Thursday — free registration here.

Loving:

The Major League Soccer playoffs, which have been amazing. There’s a two week break now (for the international window) so we’ll get back to it later this month!

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Find Visual Metaphors for Your Story

When you’re flipping through magazines, sometimes you’ll spot an image that works perfectly for a feeling or theme you’ve got going on (or one you’re thinking about for the future). Whether it’s a calm beach scene, a crowded street, or some pretty flowers — let them serve as a metaphor for the mood or story you’re telling.

Pro Tip: Choose images that resonate with what’s going in your life right now, like nature scenes for calm or cityscapes for energy. How can this magazine layer support your story?
