What the #*$% is Feminist Scrapbooking?

Scrapbooking + Intersectional Feminism = Your Amazing Stories

I love taking pictures, telling stories, playing with pretty paper stuff -- so naturally, putting all those things together into scrapbooks is totally my jam.

One day, I was at a live scrapbooking event for a shop I was teaching at in college, a pair of women came up to me and told me that I 'shouldn't be scrapbooking because I didn't have kids' and 'that no one would ever care about what I was making, so what was the point?'

That was some BS. It was at that moment that I decided that the scrapbooking world needed to hear a lot more of the feminism I had been currently learning as a Women's & Gender Studies student at Rutgers University.

That's when Feminist Scrapbooking was born.

So what is it?

The Idea That Your Story is Valuable

You are enough. You don't have to be someone's mom, daughter, sister, or anyone's anything in order for your story to be important to this world. Your story matters.

Agency Over Your Own Story

You decide what stories to tell. You decide how to share, what to share, and the ways in which you share it with the world. When you're scrapbooking those stories, not only are you using words, but you're also playing with photography and all of your favorite paper supplies. The possibilities for you to express yourself are so much cooler.

It's Intersectional

Intersectionality is a term coined by professor Kimberlé Crenshaw in the late 1980's to describe the 'intersection' of characteristics like gender, race, class, etc.

Feminist Scrapbooking asks you to look at your stories through an intersectional lens.
