Behind the Page

Today we make art.

I don’t really have a ton of great words for today. But I do know that it’s important to find happiness and joy in our lives. For most of us here — that involves art or creativity in some manner.

Today we make art.

Art exists as a response to the world in which we live. Don’t close yourself off. Give yourself space to process your feelings. Art-ing out your feelings is one of the best possible ways for you to engage with a range of different emotions.

Today we make art.

It can be so much easier to get out your feelings in color, shape, and texture. You don’t need the perfect words, you don’t need to think about grammar or punctuation. It’s just you, your feelings, and the art.

Tomorrow, we wake up and make art again.

Technique of the Day

I needed to keep my hands busy today, so I decided to go with a bit of precision cutting. To create these letters, I took a sheet of tissue paper and added some roll adhesive to the back (in essence making it tissue sticker paper). I’ve got some great helvetica letter stencils from Westcott that I picked up at Blick a few years ago. I traced the letters in reverse onto the back of the adhesive side. I trimmed them all up with my tiny scissors and stuck them right into my book. It was exactly what I needed today.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Use the Page to Name What You’re Feeling

Sometimes, just putting your emotions into words can bring relief. Use your Daily Pages as a place to get out what’s going on inside — don’t worry about grammar, perfect words, or any of that. Just get the feelings out of your head and onto the page. Are you feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious? Naming your feelings can help you feel seen and heard, even if it’s just for yourself. This can turn your Daily Pages into a safe space where your feelings have room to breathe outside of your body.

Pro Tip: Start with “Today I feel…” and let the words flow. How does giving your feelings a name help to shift your perspective, even a little?
