Vanessa's State of Me Album: Body
The following is a guest post from rukristin Creative Team member (and one of my personal style heroes) Vanessa. Today Vanessa is sharing a step-by-step tutorial on how she crafted this incredible feminist art journal using the album from this summer's Find Your Voice Workshop kit. -----
Hey all, I’m very glad to be back on the Awesome Ladies Creative Team. For my first project, I decided to use the Find Your Voice kit available in the rukristin shop. I’ve been coveting the 6 x 9 Basically Bare album for a while. I decided to make myself a Lady Journal, just like Kristin made a while ago. The first thing I did was stitch together some fabric to cover my album.

I used some of the amazing remnants I brought back from Mexico. I decided to use my album vertically so it looks like this.

Inside, I put a layer of black gesso and used some gold chipboard alphas. ‘State of me’ will be a place to lay down my emotions. We all have layers of feeling and I wanted a place to consolidate them. This is it.

My first foray into this journal is sadness. I took a self-portrait where I’m striking a sad pose. I then traced myself so that I would have a template of my silhouette.

I cut out the silhouette from the watercolor paper that comes with the album.

This means I have two pages to watercolor, the silhouette that I cut out and the negative of my form.

I pulled out some Dura-Lar which is a new medium that I had never used before. It is super smooth and so cool to draw on. I used the Precision Pen that comes with the kit.

The album also comes with some cool transparency pages. I placed one of them over my picture and used a gold Pilot pen to make rays around my figure.

Here is how all the layers look placed one on top of the other.

There you have it. I hope you enjoyed this photo heavy post and that it inspires you to construct your own Lady Journal, just for you.
