Behind the Page

This page was originally created last month but it’s coming to you this evening because I lost power this afternoon and didn’t get to create a page for today, so you get this awesome post that I’ve been sharing for just such an emergency. I’ll be back to my normal December Daily Pages tomorrow!

While I was moving stuff around, I came across my box of guilding flakes and decided to see what would happen if I just laid the flakes on my naked gel plate. Would they stick? Would the paint pick them up? Would everything just flake off when the paint dried?

You know how much I love playing around and experimenting in these pages, so this was the ideal time to mess around. And it went fabulously. Honestly, the biggest annoyance was how long it took to put the foil onto the gel plate. That was the longest time suck, but also, absolutely worth it. I’m absolutely going to be doing this again in the near future.

Technique of the Day

Today’s page reminds me of outer space. The black-ish background, and the different color metal bits throughout the page. I wanted to make sure to keep as much of the background as possible, so I found a simple Brandi sticker and added some black strips underneath for a little bit of subtle texture.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Combine a Trusted Favorite with a Wild Card

Start with a supply you love and know well—maybe a favorite pen or paint color (or the gel plate like me). Then, introduce something you’ve never used before, like an unusual texture or a new medium (like the guilding flakes). Let the familiar item ground you while the wild card adds an element of surprise. This balance keeps the process playful and approachable.

Pro Tip: Try pairing bold acrylic paint with a delicate pencil sketch or adding glitter to a muted color palette. How does the contrast bring new energy to your page?
