I saw my die-cut machine this morning while I was straightening up and I thought I’d play around with some gel prints and a die or two. Originally I had pulled some die cut leaves and vines, and I was planning on pulling some green-aqua prints. But then I came across this cool die with all these tiny holes and thought it would be fun to play around with.
Technique of the Day
Today was all about using these gel prints and dies to create interesting textures. For today’s page I grabbed two (mostly) solid color gel prints. The pink/magenta one underneath has a cool almost splotchy texture. It’s fun to look through the solid yellow print and see the textured color underneath.
I love the juxtaposition between that muddled texture and the super smooth texture on the yellow. It’s also fun that there’s a little bit of that blue paint in a couple of spots too. That’s the thing I really love about gel mono prints. They’re unique and special — no two are ever really the same.
Reflections & Insights
The hardest thing about this page was figuring out how I was gonna adhere this hole-filled layer. My ideal adhesive scenario is putting down some of the wide roll adhesive on the back of the gel print and then running the die and print through the machine again. But, the roll adhesive makes the print much thicker, and I didn’t feel like messing with the machine to make it cut properly.
So on one side I used some gel medium and that worked fine. I don’t love using wet glues in my Daily Pages notebooks, but sometimes it is the easiest thing, especially when your paper has tiny little holes. On the other side I used a glue stick — just the regular kind that you’d use for school, and I really like how that worked. I wound up getting a bunch of extra glue in the holes, but since I was gluing on top of scrap paper, I just folded up the scrap and threw it out.
Glue stick is definitely my recommendation. It’s cheap, easy, and works pretty well in the notebook.
