It's been a headache week -- here's how I still manage to get stuff done
Hey friends!
This has been a rough week headache wise. Hail storms, rapidly changing temperatures, a bunch of different things contributing to a painful week. But, that’s alright, after hundreds of weeks like this over the last decade and a half — I know how to work with a headache week, instead of against it.
Here are a few things I learned about how to manage life when your body is fighting you. These tips work not just for those of us with headaches, but anyone who wants to be creative and has a body that fights them sometimes.
What’s your bare minimum? What are the things you absolutely have to do? Let’s be clear — this is not about what you think you *should* be getting done. This is about what needs to get done. For me, the bare minimum each day is eating breakfast, showing up to Daily Pages, getting the newsletter out, and triaging email/DMs. If there’s an emergency that comes up, I’ll handle it or delegate it out to someone else. All other updates and messages can be dealt with when it’s easier to look at a screen and brain up some words.
Concentrate on the important stuff. Sleep, staying hydrated, simple foods, being kind to yourself. Everything gets so much worse when you’re not eating, sleeping, and being an ass-hat to yourself. For me, I need to eat in the mornings, and it needs to be something that isn’t sweet. In order to make this happen, during the good times, I do some prep to make sure I’ve got easy food in the fridge or pantry that I can just eat without any friction on headache days.
Anything you can salvage is a win. While I was in my accountability group meeting yesterday,
mentioned this as we were chatting about how to deal with having a sick week. Once you do everything you’ve got on your bare minimum list, then whatever else you can get out of the day is a win. It’s a net positive. For me, it’s really important to remember this part, and even document it down in my planner.
And it never hurts to eat lots of yummy soup along the way. This one is a tomatillo soup with grilled tortillas and lots of cilantro. Last night’s dinner was potato soup with cheese and scallions. We’re almost at the end of soup season — gotta enjoy them while the weather stays cool.

Tip of the Week
Daily Pages is great for playing around. And when we play, we learn. This week, while playing around with stickers, I spent time thinking about the ways in which I like to put stickers down on the page, the number of stickers I like in my clusters, and how much white space I like on a sticker collage page.
Spending time playing and learning each day with a Daily Pages habit is a great way to both feel more confident in your creating, but also to create muscle memory and examples with the styles you like to use.
