Behind the Page

Today I was flipping through some new papers that I have on my desk, and I came across a sheet that was going to work really well for today’s page. This is a sheet from Ali Edwards’ new kit—most of the 6x8 papers are designed to be used vertically, but this one was perfect to rotate 90 degrees and glue into my notebook.

Everything right now is Fourth Wing. I’m so excited for tomorrow’s book release. I haven’t been this into a book series since the days of HP and Twilight.

I accidentally did a bit of smudging on today’s stamping. It wasn’t my intention for everything to feel as grungy as it does, but that’s what happens when you get the ink on your hands and then put your hands all over the paper. My bad.

Technique of the Day

This week’s Currently List:

Watching:

NFL Playoffs — this weekend was not my favorite weekend of football. I did not love that KC/Houston game (the announcers weren’t really feeling it either), the Lions loss was heartbreaking. And the Ravens just can’t seem to beat the Bills when it matters. Which sucks, because the Bills can’t seem to beat the Chiefs when it matters. But whatever.

LOST — We’re in season three now. Lots of Desmond.

Venture Bros — That’s the show we put on when we don’t want to watch anything we need to use our brains for, but we don’t want to get in bed yet.

Mrs. Davis — We’re rewatching this one while we cook, and it’s absolutely amazing to go through it a second time, knowing everything that happens.

Cooking YouTube — My go-to YT videos are all about cooking. I’m enjoying the King Arthur channel a lot right now, I’ll also flip through some of the cooking bros here and there, I have a soft spot for Alvin on the Babish Channel and I love Made with Lau.

Reading:

Fourth Wing + Iron Flame (I’m following along, highlighting, and writing notes when I’m listening to the audiobooks)

Listening:

Fourth Wing + Iron Flame — I’ve been actively listening to both audiobooks to finish them up before the third book comes out tonight. I’ve been listening to Fourth Wing in bed before falling asleep (I’ve been through it a few extra times) and I’ve been listening to Iron Flame during the day while I’m doing chores (this way I can think more about the theories I’ve got).

I’m also finishing up The Great Library series. I’ve got about 30 minutes left in that one, but the FW and IF books have been at the forefront of my brain the last week.

Making:

I’m making some chicken tonight. I’m not entirely decided on flavors — but we’re doing a braised whole chicken (spatchcocked), mashed potatoes, and whatever vegetable I pull out of the freezer (spinach?).

I’ve also been making a bunch of digital art since I got myself a new apple pencil at the end of last month. A lot of it is just for me, but I’ve also been having fun sharing a few things here and there.

Feeling:

Excited for the book tonight.

Planning:

To take a nap this afternoon. I want to get as much of this book read as possible before I have to interact with other humans. And at this point in my life, I’m usually asleep (or at least in bed) at midnight. So I’m thinking that a solid nap this afternoon is going to be essential for getting as much of this book read as possible.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Embrace the Happy Accidents

Smudges, ink stains, and other "oops" moments can add personality and texture to your pages. Sometimes the imperfections are what make a page feel more authentic and lived-in, so embrace the grungy vibes when they happen.

Pro Tip: Keep a small stash of coordinating washi tape or little bits to layer over unexpected smudges when you want to turn them into intentional design elements.
