Behind the Page

I wasn’t sure where to start on today’s page, when someone reminded me that it was Wednesday, and I could always do a washi Wednesday page. With that in mind, I walked over to the side of my studio, where I’ve got my washi tape on the wall, and grabbed a ring of super thin washi tape, in all the colors.

I had each of the colors on separate rings already, so it was easy to separate out the red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple colors so that I could easily create a rainbow. I’m still feeling tired after yesterday’s big day with the doctor’s appointment at -15 below, and reading all of Onyx Storm before dinner (staying up at midnight and reading for three+ hours really helped). So it was great to just be able to concentrate on picking out a length of tape and sticking it down next to another color of tape.

My favorite thing about creating simple pages where I’m just repeating the same thing over and over, is that I get to really mentally deep dive into things that might otherwise not get noticed. Today it was all about how the different colors look next to each other, and how fun it is when the colors ‘change’ based on the colors it’s next to.

Technique of the Day

I wanted this page to feel a little more light and airy, so I decided to add in some white space in between each bit of tape, and not take the color all the way to the edges. The black sticker with the clear background sticks out in the best way, and lets each of the colors shine behind it equally.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Embrace the Power of Repetition

Simple, repetitive techniques—like lining up strips of washi tape—can be surprisingly meditative. They give your hands something to do while your mind has space to wander, reflect, and process the day.

Pro Tip: Use repetition as a way to relax and reset when you're feeling mentally or physically drained.
