Today’s Color

Behind the Page

I had fun playing with the idea of light orange today. As you can see, there are lots of different shades of orange on here. That’s been one of my favorite things with this project so far, is looking at a color and seeing how many shades and tones actually fall into the category of that color.

The tiny stickers are such a different shade than the background paper — and yet, both of them came from packages with a rainbow of colors, and these were in the light orange slot.

Technique of the Day

Collage is a great way to use up all the little bits that you’ve got lying around on your desk. Group them by shape, by texture, by color, or even just whatever fits on the page.

Reflections & Insights

When starting out with collage, lean into the things you like in the rest of your art. I love geometric patterns, shapes, and colors. So you’ll see me start out with big circle stickers, add in some strips, and then move on to filling in the gaps. If you love patterns, start by creating a pattern. If you love words, start with letter stickers, or a quote. If you love photos, grab a bunch of tiny photos and stick them down.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Acquiring collage materials is not an overnight thing. Don’t be dissuaded if you don’t have a bunch of random bits and bobs. The stuff that I have, I’ve picked up here and there over the last few decades. Start collecting the things you like — and store them in a way that works for you and the way you create. I’ve got my stuff stored by color, and it works great for me!
