Today’s Color

Behind the Page

We’ve got a few different yellows coming up over the next few days, and we’re starting out with light yellow (aka pale yellow, baby yellow, butter yellow).

Light yellow isn’t the easiest color to just grab — most of my inks, markers, and paints were a lot brighter than what I consider a ‘light’ yellow. So I decided to make my own light yellow with acrylic paint.

Technique of the Day

Acrylic paint with stencil — it’s honestly something a little kid could do. It’s a ton of fun. As long as you know going into it, it’s never going to turn out perfectly and give yourself that grace to embrace imperfection.

Like I said above, I mixed some white and yellow paint to give myself a more muted color. I love how you can get a little bit of dimension with the acrylic paint. It’s not enough to be a burden on your album, but it is enough that you can see the raised edges and feel it when you run your fingers over the page.

Reflections & Insights

Having trouble finding a color? Make your own! Not sure where to start, use google. Ask “what color paints should I mix to create x, y, or z”. Start with their suggestions or go out on your own and have fun.

Remember that the whole point of Color Month is to have fun and experiment — it’s not about getting an A+ for the perfect color. As long as you’re learning and enjoying yourself, you’re getting that A+.
