Rediscovering embossing powder, experimenting with forgotten techniques, and adding fresh creative sparks to Daily Pages
Behind the Page
I’m loving today’s page.
A couple of days ago, I was struggling with ink smudging all over my page. I had completely forgotten that when I use my favorite black ink on top of acrylic paint (any gel print), it doesn’t dry quickly at all. And if it’s wet, I’m absolutely going to make a mess everywhere.
So today, I pulled this gel print and decided to grab some large stamps for my Thursday3 spread. Then, I remembered my smudging, and decided to pull out some embossing powder to lay over the top of the stamped numbers.
I legitimately haven’t used this stuff in more than 10 years. The last time I remember using embossing powder was definitely back when I lived in NJ, so this stuff is absolutely at least a decade old, and I had no idea if it would still work, or if I would even remember how to use it. But I really wanted to try it out and I love that Daily Pages gives me this space to just play around and have fun.
Luckily, everything worked perfectly, and I’m super happy with how the page turned out, but even if it wasn’t awesome, I learned how to use embossing powder again and that was totally worth it alone. I’m sure you’ll be seeing it again soon on some future pages.
Technique of the Day
I can’t get a great picture of how cool the embossing looks in person, but if you watch the video below, you can check it out a bit. It’s such a cool look on the painted paper. And best part—absolutely no smearing at all, so everything stayed nice and neat.
How to use embossing powder (you can check out the full video below to see how I put this whole page together):
Stamp your image.
Cover your stamped image with the embossing powder.
Dump off the excess embossing powder (put it back in the jar).
Heat set the embossing powder (keep your heat gun higher up to start, and move around slowly until everything liquifies).
This is clear embossing powder, but it comes in all different colors and you can do some really cool things with them. So I’m going to see if I can find my other old embossing powders (they’re definitely in the garage) and incorporate that into some pages in the future.
