Behind the Page

Today was one of those days where you just let the stuff lead the story. I had no idea what I wanted to make, so I started flipping through some old magazines for inspiration. I came across this school paper, and knew that I was going to use it as my background.

After that, I grabbed a few different things I had — a ‘school’ stamp from Ali Edwards (which then gave me the idea to make this page about the new Fourth Wing book aka Dragon School). I pulled out the little bits that I’ve got (I organize them by color) and grabbed something red and something blue—pulling those colors out of the background.

There are going to be a lot of Dragon School pages over the next few weeks. I promise to keep spoilers out of the photos and the emails, but you’ll definitely be seeing more as I dive into the new book next week.

Technique of the Day

Color is important to everything I create. It’s the main reason that I sort my embellishments, die cuts, and other little bits by color. This way, when I need a little something, I can pull out the drawer with all the little red somethings, or all the little blue somethings.

Today, I found an red old stamp and this blue speech bubble in my stash. I went looking for red and blue specifically, because I wanted to pull out those colors from the background to make it pop just a little bit more.

This is one of my favorite ways to start a page from scratch.

  1. Grab a background paper.

  2. Pick out 2-3 colors in the background paper you chose, and find supplies that match those colors.

  3. Decide how you’re gonna tell the story (prompts are amaaazing when you’re not sure what direction to go into).

  4. Stick everything down and write a few sentences about what you’re thinking.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Let the Background Lead the Way

Choosing a bold or interesting background paper is a great way to kickstart your page when you don’t know where to begin. The colors and patterns can guide your design choices and help shape the story you want to tell. This is a great way to let it be easy.

Pro Tip: Flip through your stash and pick a background that speaks to your mood or current obsession—it’s a great jumping-off point.
