Behind the Page

I felt like getting painty today — and I ran into a host of drying issues when I tried out a new-to-me product that lengthens the drying time of your paint. It did exactly what it said it would…it made it next to impossible to dry in time for Daily Pages.

I thought I was going to have a easy afternoon where I made a bunch of new gel print papers and chose whatever one was most interesting for today’s Thursday3 page. But nope — I did not get a whole bunch of prints. Just two — one a super wet one with not much paint (this was my journaling block) and the one I used for the background (which took for.ev.er. to dry). But I’m happy with the final outcome, even if that’s not exactly what I was expecting today.

Technique of the Day

The other fun thing that I did today was add mix some metallic acrylic paint and rubbing alcohol to give myself a more splatter-able paint. I think I probably added just a bit too much alcohol this time (it’s not as pronounced as I want it to be), but I’m super excited to experiment with this again in the future!

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Paint doesn’t have to be the focal point—it can also create fab backdrops for your words.

Today, for my journaling, I used the paper I was cleaning off my brayer onto. But there are lots of other ways to get painty with your words. Try washing a light layer of watercolor or acrylic across the page to create a subtle background that makes your writing pop. This adds a soft touch of color without overwhelming the words you want to add later. Try blending multiple colors together for a ombre/gradient effect or keeping it simple with just one shade.

Tip: For a more textured background, use a sponge, brayer (like me) or crumpled paper towel to blot the wet paint, giving it a unique pattern that still lets your journaling shine.
