Behind the Page

We started really prepping for Thanksgiving last night. We finished up our grocery shopping and got started making our food. First thing we did was debone the entire turkey. I roasted all the bones and made stock last night. The house smells amazing and I’m excited to work it some more tonight.

My plans for later include fortifying the stock, trimming bread into cubes for stuffing, and putting away the veggies from the CSA. If I’m feeling extra in the groove, I’ll make the cranberry sauce tonight too. But honestly, I’m gonna wanna chill on the couch and watch the latest episode of Bad Sisters, so we’ll see how much I get done.

Technique of the Day

Last night, when I was falling asleep, I thought about playing with the letter stencils on the gel plate today—for a holiday message. I actually remembered it when I woke up, and got to work when I got to my desk.

First thing I realized was that I did not have ‘traditional’ Thanksgiving colors that were going to work for this project. Sarah asked how I could re-think traditional colors. And I got the idea to try to mix-up some Honolulu Blue, the color of the Detroit Lions, who always play a home game on Thanksgiving, in the early afternoon when I’m finishing up the cooking. Being in Michigan, it’s a great treat to watch them (be actually good) on the holiday.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Reflect on the Meaning of the Holiday

Every holiday has its own deeper meaning, whether it’s about gratitude, generosity, renewal, connection, etc. Use your creative journal as a space to reflect on what the holiday means to you personally. Think about why you celebrate it and how you feel connected to its spirit. This can be a grounding exercise that brings intentionality into the season. And remember — not everything deep has to be super serious. I am firmly Team Potato when it comes to Thanksgiving.

**Pro Tip**: Journal a bit about what the holiday represents to you, beyond the traditions and festivities. How does taking this time to reflect change your connection to the holiday?
