Behind the Page

I had such a great time with all the Halloween stuff last month, it was so easy to have everything out in a container I could keep on my desk. I started out this morning by putting all that stuff away in a orange-topped zipper bag, so that I can easily pull it out again next season (or in between if I really need some spooky stuff). I’m going to wind up doing the same thing (maybe on a larger scale) for my December stuff.

I think for this month, I’ll just wind up doing a bunch of random things in my notebook. Our LENS theme for the month is Vintage, so I know I’m gonna pull out a few older things to play around with and mix into whatever I’m having fun with right now.

Technique of the Day

I wanted to create a full background of this grit stamp. The Detroit Lions have been using the word grit on their team walls for the last few years, and it’s been really amazing to watch them go from literally unable to win a single game — to scoring 50+ points a game. They’re a great second team for me, especially since the NY Football Giants are having a tough go of it right now.

Tips & Creative Wisdom

Create a Pattern for Pure Fun

Playing with patterns is a fantastic way to relax into your creative practice. Pick a shape—circles, stars, squares, literally anything—and repeat it across the page in different colors, sizes, or styles. It’s a bit like doodling but with a playful, meditative twist. I’m a huge fan of creating patterns with stamps. Before you know it, you’ll have a page full of pattern magic.

Pro Tip: Try filling each shape with a different color or texture to keep things interesting. How does focusing on just one shape help you get lost in the fun?
