Scrapbooking with a Kit: Freckled Fawn | February 2016
Happy February!
As a member of the Freckled Fawn design team, I get sent their monthly OhDeerMe embellishment kit a few weeks early in order to create fun and inspiring projects that help showcase the innovative and always lovely embellishment (and now planner) kits. This month's kit, Lovely, is bright and fun, and exactly the antidote needed to a long and dreary winter.
The Lovely kit is now available in the Freckled Fawn shop. The kit includes various coordinating embellishments perfect for scrapbook pages, pen pal letters, smashbooks, art journals, or whatever type of crafting you're into. This month's kit comes in this fabulous geometric-patterned pouch.

When I opened up the kit, I was really drawn to the transparency alphabet. It's bright, it's a super fun type, and I just wanted to spread them all out and stare for hours. I threw them onto two sheets of 9x12 white cardstock (stamped at the bottom) and went from there.
At first I struggled a little bit with how to attach them to my page. I wanted them scattered across the page, so a stapler was out. My tape roller has microdots, which aren't flattering behind clear embellishments. I decided on glue dots -- I would have preferred to use smaller ones than I did, but apparently I need to restock my stash of tiny glue dots.
Currently: Double Page 9x12 layout
I started adhering down the transparent alphabets in order to create a background pattern, using a single medium sized glue dot on each letter. I left some white space underneath where I put my photograph (why waste the embellishments?) and trimmed off the excess around the edges of background sheet of cardstock.
To finish up this page, I added a black and white photo to the top left corner. I embellished the photo with puffy heart stickers and a cork speech bubble with the journaling sticker on top. I really love the way using a kit makes matching embellishments super easy.
I've been really into playing around with opposites on my double page layouts lately. The bright colors in February Lovely kit were perfect for this. On the opposite page, I used nine of my Currently List Post It Notes and journaled about all the things that have been going on in my life lately. It was a great way to document a lot of my right-now life all at once in such a bright and fun way. I'm a huge fan of the juxtaposition of the fun type & super bright colors vs the bold type & black/white.
Selfie Photo Love: Single 9x12 Layout
My second project for this month was also a 9x12 scrapbook layout, this time I stuck with just a single page. This layout is also a little bit more subdued than the previous layout -- I opted to pick a softer color pattern and really play up the cork texture and color.
To create this layout, I started with a black and white photo in the center of my page. Throughout the page, I added small bits of patterned paper on top of the white cardstock background. I cut a triangle out of a bold yellow pattern, and stuck it behind the photo, leaving only a pop of color. In the upper left corner, I added a strip of blue patterned paper on top of a larger pink pattern. On the bottom third of the layout, I used a black and white pattern, with a strip of solid washi tape at the top.
The real focus of this layout is on the five cork shape journaling boxes. In the kit these are two separate supplies: cork speech bubbles and journaling stickers. They were designed to coordinate together, and they were perfect for getting down the little bit of journaling I had in mind for this layout. If you follow me on instagram, you might noticed that I post a photograph of myself each Thursday and tag it #Thursday3. I wanted to create a scrapbook layout telling the origin story of the #Thursday3 challenge.
Breaking up the journaling into five separate sentences made writing out the story much easier. Origin stories, or stories where you explain how something started, can be a little bit dry and not all that much fun to journal about. With these shapes I was able to easily tell the story in five quick thoughts that were all totally separate, yet blended into one another nicely.
I finished up the layout with some big alpha sticker and handwritten title, underlined with a couple of overlapping strips of the copper heart washi tape from the kit. I really like how the tone of the copper matches with the tone of the photos and the tone of the cork shapes. It has a utilitarian feel that I'm really into.
