By embracing a daily creative habit, I've grown more as an artist in the last 3 years combined than in my past two decades as a maker.
Don't believe me? Popular artists like
(Steal Like an Artist) and Lisa Congdon (Find Your Artistic Voice) have both written about how essential a daily practice is to their artistry.Through my daily creative scrapbooking practice, I have been able to nurture my own voice and figure the tools, styles, colors, etc that I truly love and feel inspired using.
A daily creative habit helped mold me into an empowered artist, who knows how to craft the stories of her life in a meaningful way and wants that for you too.
How to craft a creative habit that works for your life & the things you want to create:
1. The Habit of Making is the Most Important.
It doesn't matter if you're creating with watercolors, journaling, or making Daily Pages like me. What you're trying to do is figure out where in your day-to-day life this habit is going to succeed. Find a way to set yourself up for success. 5 minutes in a tiny notebook could be all you need.
2. Keep Your Minimum Standards Simple & Doable
When setting yourself up for success, keep it as simple as you can. Don't over-complicate things. By keeping things simple, you're giving yourself the best chance to follow through on your plans. You can always do more on any given day.
3. Don't Let Your Ego Get in The Way
This is about putting in the work. It's not about always creating something better than your previous creation. It's not about the highest streak. And some days your art is just not going to be that good. It's okay. You aren't in competition with yourself, you're creating a habit. So if life gets in the way -- no big deal -- the world is bigger than we are, just acknowledge that and move on. Tomorrow is another day.
