Behind the Page

Do you have a background tv show? I’ve always got a background TV show for when I’m doing physical tasks around the house. Whether it’s chopping vegetables (a personal favorite), organizing my studio, or just straightening up the rest of my house — I’ve always got a background show on for entertainment.

What makes a show a background show? For me, it’s a show that I can put on, and walk out of the room (or just stop paying attention) for a minute or two, and not lose the whole thread of the show. Usually it’s shows I’ve already seen before, especially procedural shows where the plot is stretched out a little more, like Bones. I just finished up re-watching Bones yesterday and I wanted to document it in my Daily Pages notebook.

This isn’t really a story that I would ever dedicate an entire scrapbook page about, but I really do love telling these tiny stories in these notebooks. And for me, TV is a big hobby of mine, I’m pretty snobby about it, important TV gets scheduled on the calendar, and it’s an important way for me to connect with family and friends. So while, TV and TV stories often wind up in my scrapbooks, I’m not usually telling the stories of finishing up my background show for the however-many-ith time.

But honestly, after 246 episodes, I think it deserved a little spot of its own.

Technique of the Day

Sometimes these notebook pages are great for just writing down some facts. Throughout the process today, I was feeling incredibly indecisive. I didn’t know what stamp set I wanted to use, I didn’t want to use the secondary stamp set I had — I switched to letter stickers, I couldn’t decide on the colors. It was just one of those days. So I fell back on the basics and used black letter stickers to get across my point.

I didn’t really feel like writing much — I suppose I could have put my favorite episodes, characters, or story arcs — but that wasn’t really what was important to me today. I just wanted to document that I had finished this series, and I think I accomplished that pretty well.

Reflections & Insights.

Make things easy.

I really tried (and stumbled my way through) that today. For me, one of the easiest ways to do that is to have a ‘fallback’ supply. Something that I don’t have to even think about, and I know I’ll be satisfied with. Whenever I’m feeling super overwhelmed with options, I quiet the voices in my head by just going to my fallback option. Usually it’s alpha stickers, black ink, solid color washi tape — things that are simple, I have easily accessible, and I don’t have to think too much to use them properly.

What are your fallback supplies?
